Helen Mae Egan

April 2, 1937 — January 30, 2025

Kaufman, Texas

Helen Mae Egan, age 87, passed away on January 30, 2025, in Kaufman, Texas. She was born on April 2, 1937, in Gladewater, Texas to parents Benjamin “Frank” Franklin and Eula Mae (Abna) Hewitt.

A proud graduate of Gladewater High School, Helen continued her education by taking classes at Kilgore Community College. She was known for being very giving, smart, and opinionated, qualities that made her both a loyal friend and a guiding force for her loved ones. Helen possessed a strong personality—one that was mentally and emotionally resilient. Her stubbornness was often a topic of lighthearted discussions, but it was this characteristic that drove her to always go the extra mile when helping those in need.

Helen had a love for life that was evident in the way she spent her time. She cherished moments playing Skip-Bo with her husband "Lie-Lie," sharing laughter and camaraderie during their evening games. Her hobbies included watching television, playing the piano, and staying connected with her close friends and family through phone calls. Helen had a playful side too, regularly engaging in the lottery, quipping, "I can't win if I never play... one day I will win, watch!"

Helen dedicated her life to being a homemaker, a role she embraced with enthusiasm and passion. Helen's career spanned various jobs, but it was her role as a caregiver and supporter of her family that truly defined her legacy. Perhaps one of her proudest accomplishments was witnessing the success of her children and grandchildren. She was a loving and traditional figure in their lives, more than just a grandmother; she taught her granddaughters to be smart, strong-minded women who valued themselves. Helen saved every newspaper article, picture, and award that showcased the achievements of those she cherished, proudly displaying their milestones as a testament to her unwavering support.

Helen was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and she will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents. Frank and Eula Hewitt; husband, Michael F. Egan; and her siblings, Royce Hewitt, Marie Hewitt, Anna Richardson, Joyce Forrest, B.F. Hewitt, James "Bud" Hewitt, and Oscar Hewitt.

Helen is survived by her children, Martha England of  California, Frank England of Kemp, Texas, and Clifford Brent of Austin, Texas; granddaughters, Bridget Kirby of Austin, Texas, Sherry England of Houston, Texas, Cathy Mullins of Mabank, Texas; grandsons, Alexander England of Mabank, Texas, and Christian Valdez of California; great-granddaughters, Baylee Baker, Caylee Baker/Cooley, Janie Estrada of Houston, Texas, and Victor Estrada of Houston, Texas; great-grandsons, Miguel Lopez, Jr. of Houston, Texas, Christian Lopez of Houston, Texas, and Marquis Mullins of Mabank, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that are family as well.
